New childcare centres

More people are raising families in the City and there’s a critical need for more child care. The City is addressing this shortage by providing more childcare centres.

Each long daycare centre will cater to children aged from 6 weeks to 6 years old and comply with national quality standards and regulations.

Development applications are currently on exhibition for new centres at The Crescent in Annandale and Sydney Park (nearby the Cycling Centre) in Alexandria and Huntley Street, Alexandria.

Construction is underway on the Darlinghurst Childcare Centre at 277 Bourke Street. Designs have also been approved for a childcare centre at the former South Sydney Hospital site on Joynton Avenue, Zetland. Construction is due to begin in 2015.

The City of Sydney is close to meeting estimated future demand for childcare by encouraging childcare places in new developments and by fast-tracking the building of six City-funded centres.

Since 2013, more than 2,000 additional childcare places have been approved under the City’s innovative Childcare Development Control Plan. Nearly 1,500 of those spaces, located across 24 centres, are expected to be ready for kids and families by next year.

Development Applications currently under assessment could add up to another 1,100 places, and the City is currently negotiating Voluntary Planning Agreements to provide childcare spaces with other private developers... Continue reading

Since 2013, more than 2,000 additional childcare places have been approved under the City’s innovative Childcare Development Control Plan. Nearly 1,500 of those spaces, located across 24 centres, are expected to be ready for kids and families by next year.

Development Applications currently under assessment could add up to another 1,100 places, and the City is currently negotiating Voluntary Planning Agreements to provide childcare spaces with other private developers ahead of submitting Development Applications.

A 2013 childcare needs study by the City found there was a shortfall of 3,100 places that year, estimated to climb to a 3,400-place gap by 2016.

That gap is now steadily closing. If development of new childcare centres continues along this current trend, the City estimates that demand could be met by 2018.

The City has also committed $55 million for childcare centres to be built now and in the future, so as more families and working parents move into this area, we will be ready to meet the demand for quality childcare.

Building is set to start this month on a new 74-place childcare centre with an outdoor play area in Green Square, the city’s fastest growing residential area. By 2030 Green Square’s population will reach 54,000.

The City has appointed a contractor to transform the heritage-listed former Royal South Sydney Hospital outpatients’ building into an accessible, safe and much needed new childcare centre. The centre will be operational by early 2017.
