Aiming high to be a low carbon city
In 2014 The City set interim environmental targets for its own operations to be achieved by the end of 2016. We are proud to say we have met our interim emissions reduction target of 26% reduction from 2006 baseline. To date the City has achieved a 27% reduction in emissions in its own operations and has been certified carbon neutral since 2011.
We are also well on the way to meeting our interim target of 5% of our electricity sourced from renewable energy sources. Currently we are at about 3%.
We are now looking to the future. We are proposing a 44% reduction (from 2006 levels) in greenhouse gas emissions by June 2021 and that 50% of electricity will be sourced from renewable sources.
Stretching out to 2030 we are proposing a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (from 2006 levels).
We have also set targets for the whole Local Government Area:
- 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (based on 2006 levels)
- Net zero emissions by 2050
- 50% of electricity demand met by renewable sources by 2030
