The City of Sydney will soon start work on other projects in and around Joynton Avenue.
South Sydney Hospital heritage wall – late April to July 2017
We will refurbish and raise the heritage wall at the boundary of the former South Sydney Hospital site on Joynton Avenue. This work requires temporary changes to the footpath, pedestrian access and parking.
Joynton Avenue stormwater drain – late 2017 to 2018
We will start work later this year on a new stormwater drain from the corner of O’Dea Avenue and Joynton Avenue to 114 Joynton Avenue. This work is part of new stormwater infrastructure to reduce the risk of dangerous flooding along Joynton Avenue. The new drain will connect to stormwater drains for O’Dea Avenue and Green Square. We will notify local residents about this project before works begin.
Joynton Avenue upgrade and new Zetland Avenue – August to late 2018
In August, we will begin works to raise the level of Joynton Avenue by up to 1.7 metres to minimise the risk of flash flooding. We will also begin construction on a new tree-lined boulevard named Zetland Avenue, connecting Joynton Avenue to the new Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre. We will notify local residents about this project before works begin.
We will remove a total of 33 street trees along this section of Joynton Avenue to complete the works, including the six trees near the intersection of Elizabeth Street. We notified the community about this last year and we have worked hard to minimise the loss of any trees.
Most of the trees are lemon-scented gums. We will replace them with trees of the same species.
The Joynton Avenue corridor will also include new large-sized Port Jackson fig trees, complementing the fig trees on the northern section of Joynton Avenue.
