Green Square is a fast-growing urban redevelopment area located only 4km south of Sydney's CBD.

The City of Sydney is working to ensure development and growth in the Green Square area is matched with exciting new community facilities, open space and parks, and transport connections.

We invite you to be part of our program of events and information to keep up to date with the latest news and development progress. We're also keen to hear your feedback on the new facilities and open space through this site and our face to face events.

Construction

Construction of the new Green Square Town Centre is underway, with Mirvac Green Square and Crown Group commencing work on new residential apartment buildings, and the City of Sydney building new streets and infrastructure and the new Green Square Library and Plaza. Bridgehill have commenced construction of residential apartments in the south of the town centre.     Green Square’s history is tied up with sporting prowess. City Historian Lisa Murray will share the story of one of Sydney’s oldest sporting identities, and the trainer of Archer, the first Melbourne Cup winner, Thomas Lamond of Zetland Lodge. This short talk draws upon research from her forthcoming book R.A.W.: A History.

    This talk will happen at 11.30am on Saturday 2nd May at the Have Your Say Day.

    A Development Application for the Town Centre (Application Number D/2015/294, 105-115 Portman Street, Zetland) is now on public exhibition.

    Description:
    Construction of a mixed use development comprising 3 buildings of a scale of 9 storeys, 11 storeys and 15 storeys above two levels of basement car parking. The proposal incorporates 250 apartments, retail tenancies along future Geddes Avenue, 321 car parking spaces accessed from future Sonny Leonard Street, tree removal and landscaping. The site has an existing frontage to Portman Street. The application is Integrated Development as an approval is required from the NSW Office of Water for temporary dewatering... Continue reading

  • Green Square Stormwater Drain Project gets underway

    Sydney Water and the City of Sydney are pleased to advise that we have formed the DG Alliance to build a 2.4- kilometre underground stormwater drain from Link Road in Zetland to the existing stormwater system at Alexandra Canal in Alexandria.

    The Alliance also consists of UGL Engineering, Seymour Whyte Constructions, Parsons Brinckerhoff Australia and RPS Manidis Roberts.

    Green Square sits on a floodplain and the major drain is essential to reduce hazardous flooding in and around the town centre and enable residential and commercial development in a low-lying area.

    The popular Green Square InfoHub is back up and running for 2015, kicking off on Saturday 14 March at the Green Square Markets in Joynton Park. Come along between 10am to 2pm to speak to City staff about new facilities planned for Green Square, including the winning design for the Green Square Aquatic Centre & Gunyama Park. Joynton Park is located on Gadigal Avenue in Zetland.

    We invite submissions on a proposal to amend the planning controls for the site at 904 Bourke Street, Zetland.

    The draft planning controls include an amended public domain layout, increased building heights and amended floor space ratio (FSR) controls.

    These will allow redevelopment of the site for:

    • residential apartments
    • a new local park
    • a new public street
    • landscaped pedestrian link.

    A development application for the Green Square Town Centre Library and Plaza has been lodged with Council and is open for feedback before 28 August.   

    The proposed works include earthworks, remediation and construction as well as the use of a predominantly underground single storey library incorporating an entry triangle with licenced cafe, sunken garden, sunken amphitheatre and a narrow seven storey library tower element.

  • Sweetacres Park and Sweet Street Naming Proposal

    A residential development is underway at 26-56 Rothschild Ave, Rosebery on the former site of the Sweetacres confectionery factory. This factory made the classic Australian sweets Fantales, Minties and Jaffas.

    The development includes a new street connecting Rothschild and Mentmore avenues, and a new 5000 sq m park and playground.

    We are proposing to name the new street 'Sweet Street' and the park 'Sweetacres Park' to reflect the site's industrial heritage.

    You can comment on the proposed names before 4 August 2014.

    We invited architects and landscape architects to enter a design competition to create a new park and aquatic leisure centre for the Green Square area. The 5 finalists have now been chosen by the competition jury.(External link) The finalists will refine their entries in the next stage of the competition and the winner will be announced later this year.
