The new pocket park at 222 Palmer Street, Darlinghurst is proposed to be named:

‘Frances Newton Reserve’

The proposed name pays tribute to Frances Newton, an American teacher who influenced the development of kindergartens in Australia. Ms Newton was the principal of the Sydney Kindergarten Training College on Roslyn Street in Darlinghurst from 1902 to 1905.

Under Ms Newton’s leadership, the number of free kindergartens in Sydney increased and dozens of women were trained as kindergarten teachers, providing education and care for children in the inner city.
