Read about Maria Fernanda Cardoso’s living public artwork, While I Live I Will Grow, which will be installed at the Green Square Community & Cultural Precinct in mid-2017. The artwork will respond to the history of the site as a wetland and address themes of water and drought, while seeking to grow with the community making Green Square their home.

Green square community and cultural precinct

The City is seeking your feedback on a proposal to re-name the former South Sydney Hospital Site and community facilities on Joynton Avenue, Zetland.

The proposed name for the entire redevelopment is the Green Square Community and Cultural Precinct.

To recognise the Aboriginal culture of Sydney, words from the language of the traditional custodians, the Gadigal people, are proposed:

    • Waranara Early Education Centre – formerly the Casualty Building. Waranara means to seek.

    • Banga Community Shed – formerly the pathology building. Banga means make or do

    Background

    Precinct Naming
As the redeveloped site will house a combination of both community and cultural
facilities, it is thought that the entire site would benefit from the designation of a single
identifying name. It is proposed that the site be named the Green Square Community
    and Cultural Precinct.

Following community consultation in in September 2014, the preferred names for the Esme Cahill Building and community shed from were Joynton Creative Studios and Banga
Community Shed. Banga is the Gadigal language word for ‘make or do’.

As part of the City’s commitment to recognise the Aboriginal culture of Sydney,
words from the language of the traditional custodians, the Gadigal, are proposed:
Waranara Early Education Centre - Waranara means to seek; and Banga
    Community Shed.

These Aboriginal words are sourced from Jakelin Troy’s The Sydney Language
(Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, 1993), the most
comprehensive word list of the Sydney language published and accepted by the
    Aboriginal community.

The two proposed Aboriginal language names, Banga and Waranara, have been
endorsed by the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Aboriginal and
    Torres Strait Islander Advisory Panel.

The name of the new open space, Matron Ruby Grant Park, was endorsed by Council on 14 May 2012 as part of the Naming of Streets and Open Space in Green Square and Ashmore Neighbourhood report.

  • Creative Centre Design

The design for the Creative Centre will feature a new sheltered outdoor space. The form of the roof will reference the building’s existing arches on the façade and extend them to the north.

This ‘canopy’ creates a public transition zone between the building and park, opening it up from its previous boxed design as a nurses quarters.

The space will be used for a range of activities such as tai chi, art classes, musical recitals and community BBQ’s. It provides shaded space for summer gatherings and wet weather shelter for planned events and community meet ups. These modifications to the... Continue reading

The space will be used for a range of activities such as tai chi, art classes, musical recitals and community BBQ’s. It provides shaded space for summer gatherings and wet weather shelter for planned events and community meet ups. These modifications to the Esme Cahill building will be sensitive to the existing heritage qualities of the building, with a focus on amplifying the characteristics of the building that make it unique.

Public amenities will be provided in the Matron Ruby Grant Park, directly adjacent to the Community Shed (Pathology Building). Again the roofs structural design references that of the existing building’s, beginning in line with the gable then gradually fanning out as it extends west.

A transparent material is proposed for the roof to allow natural light to flood into the public toilets, with brick and timber used for floors and walls, materials which are sympathetic to the sites heritage. A communal sink will slope in height to cater for all ages, providing access for children and adults.
